President-Raymond Whitley, Jr.
Raymond Whitley, Jr., is an award winning educator, who has dedicated over three decades to the education profession. His personal approach made an impact on students, whose letter writing campaign helped him to be chosen as “Houston Principal of the Year” in 1998 in a contest sponsored by the Houston Chronicle and Houston radio station 99.1. The Texas Education Agency also recognized Mr. Whitley as a successful principal, and under his leadership, Ridgegate Elementary School was the recipient of a Texas Successful School Award.
Raymond’s diverse contributions to education are noteworthy. During his 33 year career in education, he has worked in the Alief Independent School District as a teacher, and assistant principal, in the Fort Bend Independent School District as a principal, and in the Houston Independent School District as an administrator and parent coordinator for the migrant program. Raymond has also served as an adjunct professor in the Urban Education Department at the University of Houston. Other affiliations include memberships in the Association of Hispanic School Administrators, the Houston Association of School Administrators, and the Houston Area Alliance of Black School Administrators.
He has worked for Project GRAD as the principal liaison for the Jack Yates vertical team, and has served as a mentor for young men at Wheatley High High School.
Since his retirement in 2006, Mr. Whitley serves as a Volunteer in Houston Public Schools and as a member of the Board of Regents for the Texas Chiropractic College. He is also the secretary of the Parkwood Civic Club, and president and national vice president of his high school’s alumni association.
Raymond’s affiliations include membership at Good Hope Missionary Baptist church, where he and his wife have served as the lead servants for phase 2 of the capital campaign. Mr. Whitley is a church deacon, and also serves in the SHAPE ministry of the church, the greeter’s ministry, and sings in the male chorus. Additionally, Mr. Whitley and his wife serve as hosts and facilitators for a weekly small group Bible study in their home.
Raymond Whitley was in the 1969 graduating class of the Original L.C. Anderson High School in Austin, Texas. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Texas Southern University.
Married to a fellow educator (Linda) for 33 wonderful years, Raymond is the proud father of twins – Jennifer and Raymond – who are also educators.
Vice President-Jesse Shead
Born: January 14, 1947 in Austin, TX; Parents: Charles J. and Annie Mae Shead; Siblings: Charles A. Shead; Gloria Shead Wilson
Jesse Shead attended public schools in Austin and graduated from the original L. C. Anderson High School in 1965. Upon graduation, he attended the University of Texas at Austin for a semester before enlisting in the Air Force Reserve. After six months of active duty, he returned to Austin and attended Huston-Tillotson College.
In April, 1968, he left school and joined the employ of Humble Oil & Refinery (now ExxonMobil) in Baytown, TX. In June of 1968, he married Barbara Jackson. From that union, 2 boys, Kevin and Greg, were born. He remained in Baytown for approximately 35 years and retired in 2002.
He enjoys internet surfing and does “nothing” very well.
Recording Secretary-Artie Newby
Born June 20, 1947, Artie was the fourth daughter born to Artie W. & Lillie M. Newby, in Austin, Texas. She has four sisters and her one and only is brother is deceased. Artie attended the Austin public school system by attending Blackshear Elementary, Kealing Jr. High and graduated from the Original L.C. Anderson High School.
She moved her family to Houston, Texas in October 1974. Her first employment in Houston was with Conoco Oil (now Conoco-Phillips) from 1975 to April 1979. In May 1979 went to work for SBC (now AT&T). In August 2004 retired with over twenty-five years of continued service from SBC.
She is mother to Melba and Darrin and grandmother to Davida and Davontae. Her church home is Black’s Memorial M.B. Church in Austin, Texas.
Since retirement she has worked faithfully as secretary to the OLCAAA Houston Chapter as well as to the 1965 Class of Original L.C. Anderson High. Hobbies are reading romance novels and watching my daily dose of the soap operas.
Assistant Treasurer & Assistant Financial Secretary-Elaine (Nunley) Berry
Dr. Lucia Elaine Berry was born in Fort Worth, Texas. She is a 1961 graduate from the Original L. C. Anderson High School in Austin, Texas. Dr. Berry holds the following degrees and certification in education: B.S. degree in elementary education from Texas College; M. Ed. in elementary education, Ed. D. in urban education and professional reading certification from Texas Southern University; professional supervisor certification, professional mid-management administrator certification and professional superintendent certification from Prairie View A&M University.
Dr. Berry’s experiences in education were from 1966 to 2004. She was an elementary teacher fro 1966 to 1973. She held the positions of resource teacher, consultant, and director of the Emergency School Aid Act from 1973-1980. The title of assistant superintendent was held for federal programs, research and evaluation, and curriculum and instruction from 1980 to 1991. Dr. Berry held the title of associate superintendent for secondary education, curriculum, research and evaluation from 1991 to 1998. She was deputy superintendent for curriculum and instruction from 1998 to 2000. She served as interim superintendent of schools from 2003 to 2004. Her accomplished career in education was completed at Clarksville Independent School District in Clarksville, Texas and the North Forest Independent School District in Houston, Texas. She retired from the North Forest Independent after 35 years of dedicated service.
Dr. Berry’s accomplishments and awards are many, including the Surgeon Award, “Big E” Award, District Award of Merit from the Boy Scouts of America, Apple Award from Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., the Texas Education Agency, the United States Department of Education, and many other outstanding awards and recognition.
Dr. Berry serves on the Board of Director of the Sam Houston Area Council of Boy Scouts of America. She was appointed a Special Commissioner by Judges Roberta Lloyd and Lynn Bradshaw Hull. She is also a life member of the National Alliance of Black School Educators.
Dr. Berry is a very active member of the New Mount Carmel Baptist Church where she serves as a deaconess, Sunday school teacher, senior usher board member, a member of the general mission and chairperson of the education department. She is married to Kenneth W. Berry, a retired major from the Harris County Sheriff Department.
Chaplain-Rev. Nathaniel Robinson
Nathaniel Robinson is a graduate of Original L.C. Anderson class of 1965 in Austin , TX . After graduating from high school, Nathaniel served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years. He also attended St. Phillips Junior College, Texas. Soon after graduating from St. Phillips Junior College, he married Brenda Kincheon Robinson, and they have been married for over 38 years. During their marriage, they became parents to one son, Nathan Robinson (Traci), and the grandparents of two granddaughters, Latricia and Jersey Robinson.
Nathaniel is very involved in community and church related activities. He is the Associate Pastor at Greater St. Matthew Baptist Church, where he is a Sunday school teacher, and children?s Wednesday night bible study teacher. Nathaniel has always been excited about learning more about Christianity and the Bible. In 2003 he retired from his job at USI Chemical to further his education in 2005, Nathaniel received his Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Biblical Studies , Houston , Texas .
Outside church Nathaniel remains very active in the community. Nathaniel is on the Director?s Board of his neighborhood Civic Club. At times, he also works as a substitute teacher for the Houston Independent School District .
Nathaniel is not only a wonderful father and husband; he is also a great mentor, teacher, and preacher. He has dedicated his life to helping others and making people happy.
In August 2008 an election of officers was held and all officers were voted back into their positions for a four year term rather than two years.
